Understanding Breast Surgery

Got questions about Breast surgery? Our FAQ section provides clear answers on symptoms, treatment options, and what to expect for effective relief.

Breast lumps are relatively common and can have various causes, many of which are not related to cancer. Regardless of whether a lump is discovered by the patient, a healthcare provider, or through imaging methods like mammography or ultrasound, it is essential to conduct a thorough evaluation and establish an appropriate management plan.

A lumpectomy is a surgery to remove cancer from the breast. Unlike a mastectomy, a lumpectomy removes only the tumor and a margin (a small rim of normal tissue around the tumor). It leaves most of the breast skin and tissue in place.

With a lumpectomy, the breast looks as close as possible to how it did before surgery. Most often, the general shape of the breast and the nipple area are preserved.

A lumpectomy is also called a breast-conserving surgery, a partial mastectomy or a wide excision.

Procedure
With a lumpectomy, the surgeon makes an incision (cut) in the breast and removes the tumor, along with a small rim of normal tissue around it. In some cases, a person may get 2 lumpectomies in the same breast.

In breast-conserving surgery, the surgeon makes a small, cosmetically focused incision to remove the breast tumor along with a small portion of surrounding tissue. Radiotherapy is typically needed after the surgery.

Mastectomy is the medical term for the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely. A mastectomy is usually carried out to treat breast cancer. In some cases, women believed to be at high risk of breast cancer have the operation as a preventive measure. Alternatively, some women can choose to have a wide local excision, also known as a lumpectomy, an operation in which a small volume of breast tissue containing the tumor and a surrounding margin of healthy tissue is removed to conserve the breast. Both mastectomy and lumpectomy are referred to as "local therapies" for breast cancer, targeting the area of the tumor, as opposed to systemic therapies, such as chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, or immunotherapy.

This involves removing all potentially affected lymph nodes from the axilla on the side of the breast cancer if pre-operative tests suggest they are involved.

Breast surgery is a safe and effective procedure that offers a modern solution to a traditionally invasive surgery. If you are considering breast surgery, it is essential to seek treatment from a qualified and experienced specialist, such as Dr. Ashutosh Nayak, one of the best doctors for breast surgery in Kolkata.
